Half an hour later, red faced and sweating profusely, Dick parked his racer next to Oscar's up against the coastal wall. It was a quite spot and there was no traffic on the road, so Dick presumed that this was where his friend planned to wander onto the beach to set up the fishing rods. However, jumping over the low rustic wall, Oscar left the basket behind and beckoned Dick to follow him over the rocks. The tide was out and no holidaymakers had yet discovered this fairly secluded spot.

It wasn't an easy task, heaving himself over the wall and then treading carefully on the slippery wet boulders, but Dick eventually managed to catch up with his companion as he was entering a small dark cave. Having no clue for the reasoning behind this expedition, Dick leaned back against the cold damp wall to catch his breath and looked around him. The cave was freezing, much colder than would normally be expected and pitch black, making visibility impossible. Suddenly Oscar switched on a flashlight.

“Bloody hell,” Dick cursed, “Get that thing out of my eyes, and what are we doing in here?”

“Taking in the scenery,” was the simple answer, “I can trust you to keep a secret, can't I Dick?”

Dick stifled a laugh, “Don't be daft Oscar, of course you can, we've been friends for years.”

He could only make out the silhouette of his friend's body, but Oscar seemed to relax somewhat and turned to face the wall.

“Good, keeping your mouth shut just might earn you an added bonus now and again,” Oscar announced, “Let's say in the form of a winning horse that you didn't actually bet on.”

Dick Thomas was confused. He had no idea what his friend was rambling on about.

Oscar could see the other man's confusion and laughed, “Dodgy betting slips Dick! I'm going to pay you false winnings every Friday.”

“Why would you do that?” Dick asked, more confused than ever.

Oscar didn't reply, but simply took a shovel from the back of the cave and began to dig. It took ten minutes for him to uncover the black plastic bin liner from its deep sandy grave and, when its contents were revealed, Dick stepped forward to inspect it.

“Look at this,” Oscar beamed, dragging out a huge hessian sack, “Full to the brim with cash.”

Dick read the words printed on the outside of the bag, “POST OFFICE'.

“Why would you pay me to keep quiet about a mail bag?” he questioned, not understanding at all.

“To give me an alibi of course!” his friend exclaimed, “For the 8th of August last year. Just in case the coppers ever come snooping around.”

Dick cast his mind back to almost a year before, “I'm still not with you….I…” but then suddenly it dawned on him. The newspaper headlines of 'The Great Train Robbery' had been implanted firmly in his mind.
